more rock shows now
Someone called this the Summer of Rock and it's true. I've gone to more shows in the last few months than I have in ages. Maybe this is because there are no good movies out, it was hard to get into baseball with the strike potential (but go Dodgers anyway), or the general crappiness of television.
Whatever the reason, I've seen a lot of great shows lately. I wrote a bunch of reviews in the Transmissions section, but there have been loads since then: Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Hot Snakes... This thread is for more rock show reviews. No rave-going, turntable-wanking, phony crap, please.

i didnt get to go to as many shows as i wanted to this summer b/c i worked graveyard shifts 4-5 times a week but i did get to catch Pinback & crooked finger @ the knitting factory , a teaser with DJ Dan & Tiesto & Ash in LA , and Weezer with Sparta & Dashboard confessional @ irvine .
weezer was soo great . they basically sound just like their album . i wish i had gotten seats instead of the lawn up on top cuz it felt like i was watching the concert on a huge projector so i didnt really get that concert high . i really liked pinback too.. small venues are great. & they played all my favorite songs . crooked finger was cool b/c they came down frm the stage and stood in the middle of the crowd and sang a few songs unplugged .. no mic's & only an acoustic guitar & bass .

Pinback are great--one of the bands that I need to see. Who would have thought that out of all the SD bands from the early 90s that Three Mile Pilot would be one of the two with such massive repercussions? Black Heart Procession are and Pinback have way bigger followings than 3MP ever had. Well, that's how it seems to me. I gotta see Pinback. Their last CD was excellent.
Of course, the other huge SD band would be Pitchfork, which splintered off into Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt. Hot Snakes is the newest incarnation of Jehu with Rick Fork and John Reis and their Sunday night show at the Troubadour was fucking hot. Maybe because this time around it was the second-to-last gig of their tour so they were warmed up? Maybe because their latest LP was written, and not just jammed out? I tried to explain the difference between Hot Snakes/Jehu and RFTC to a friend. Rocket are more like traditional rock and roll, but revved up all the way with no filler. Hot Snakes/Jehu are pure energy and noise sculpted into neck jerking compositions that are designed to suck you in and blow your mind. This tour they even did an old Jehu song off their Merge 7". They played for a little more than an hour, mostly nonstop. It was good to see a sold-out show with tons of energy coming from the older crowd. I saw a lot of friends comeo ut of the woodwork for this one. Hopefully, the band won't crawl under a rock for too long now that the tour's over...

does anyone know how the super furry animals are live?
they're going to be at the SF fillmore on October 9th. (Jimmy eat world is performing that night @ warfield but i think i'd rather check out super furry animals live)

i would say this year is going well for rock shows...
my bootleg mini disc collection has grew pretty big now... and i can pretty much say/type the highlight of this year would be doing the indie pop hop n bop at the cornelius shows...playing w/ the his dr. sample was not bad either

Down here in SD, I went to a handful of RFTC shows. And I got to finally see the White Stripes play live through a ticket scalper, even though they are getting too popular...Cornelius rocked the house at the Belly Up Tavern. Sonic Youth played at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Damn, the Hot Snakes show was sold out last Friday!

Columbus Ohio rarely gets any cool bands. I saw weezer with sparta and dashboard confessionals. I was going to go see Queens of The Stoneage later this week, but I am short on cash. I want to see Zwan when they tour and that's pretty much it. There are some small local bands that play in our artsy area. When I drive I'm gonna go see those on a weekly basis.

How about a Giant Robot concert like the ones in Little Tokyo back in the day.but not strictly rock, there should be some turntable wanking and even some microphone-masturbation to accompany the guitar stroking and drum fondeling. That would go over quite well, with Los Angeles being so event-deprived these days.Any takers?

That GR concert was great. If you missed it, we had Money Mark, J Church, and the Red Aunts play at the JA National Museum and then had Seam, J Church, Wussum Pow, and Chync play in our backyard. Also, there was a Beat Junkies show in the Little Tokyo plaza. Good times.
No plans for shows in the near future, but you never know. It depends on friends coming to town or people giving us their money to use! I saw Common Rider last week. That's Jesse from OPIV's new band. Man, I felt old there, but it was great. Some of the band's songs are better than others, but when they're on, the vibe is amazing. Classics of Love, indeed. The show made me feel a lot better after the GR softball team got waxed. Also, I saw Ray Barbee jamming with a mysterious drummer and Fluf man O at ASR over the weekend. Ray has a real sweet sound (anyone see him at the GR store opening?), and that impromptu set helped me get over this week's cancelled furniture store show.

that would be cool .
i would expect a fair number of people like bands or artists or cool company execs to show up& donate their time & re$ource$ for a GR sponsored event . host it at a museum or beach . could sell tickets for 15-30 bucks a head . sell a grip of merchandise . get a nice tan . that might be worth the $130 bucks to fly down to socali

saw the pattern on saturday, their record release show.
two denali shows lined up for this weekend. i should be doing homework. it sucks that most of the good shows come in when i'm in school. cursed night classes!!! time in malta in october. thrice, curl up and die, and hot water music in november. Last edited by Empty Screams; 09-09-2002 at 04:35 PM.
