is it bad to use a computer in a non-air conditioned room when it's a really hot day? my apartment was pretty freaking hot today.

Yes, but the the damage you'll do is long-ranging and cumulative. It's hard to say specifically how long you can run that way and still have a working computer. You'll know if it's too hot when your system shuts down because it reaches some thermal threshold.

You don't have to keep it as cold as a computing lab or anything though.

At a minimum, keep a fan pointed at the machine so that it can draw relatively cooler air in across the components and keep the hot exhausted air moving away from the computer.

My home office has really terrible air flow (like the rest of our house) and so I keep a fan running in my office just to keep the air moving. It gets a bit chilly in there when our central AC is running. But I like to get as much use out of my stuff as I can so I put up with it.

yeah, I figured as much. I was just cheaping out on using the ac today. I did feel the sides of the case once in a while to see if the computer was getting hot and it never felt warm to the touch. but I suppose I shouldn't tax it like that unnecessarily. at least ssds run a little cooler. I don't know if that affects the overall heat being generated by the CPU and graphics card and all that.

how about I cool it off with a nice hot smack to your guys' faces? hm? how about that?

or I could put it in the freezer. I'll drill some holes in the side of my fridge for the cords.

I'm seriously considering liquid cooling when I do my next CPU/mobo swap

It used to be but it's not so much anymore. Liquid cooling kits have come down in price and complexity.

what are safe running temps for Intel i5 3rd gen CPUs? mine hits the high 40s, almost 50 Celsius, when I'm running my music program.

My upload speed has gone to shit. I used to average 20+ Mbps in speed tests (my internet plan calls for up to 35 Mbps/35 Mbps).

I called Verizon and the tech support guy told me to reset my router (didn't help), he then "reboot the system" (didn't help), then he told me to try a different ethernet cable (didn't help), then to try out different ports in the back (didn't help). He concluded that the router itself must be the problem, so he's sending out a new one to me. ::shrug::

Verizon tech support has been good to me, but this was the first time I've had a less than stellar experience. When I first got on the line with the tech guy (who sounded like he was in his 20's) and he was taking my information, he started drumming loudly on his desk. Then throughout the call he seemed pre-occupied with something else. He was helping me, but while on the phone I could just imagine him browsing/texting on his cellphone or something. I kept things friendly, but inside I was really irritated.

Verizon support is hit or miss. if i get the feeling that the rep is a dimwit, then i hang up and call again until i get someone that sounds like they know what they're doing.

one time, i called to cancel my DSL because i was moving. the homegurrl was laughing it up and chatting it up with her co-worker, right before she said her greeting. and she was mumbling the whole time like she was wearing grillz or something.

anyways, i was 5 days away from the end of my contract. she said i'd have to pay an early termination fee if i cancelled now. i asked if she could delay the cancellation and terminate service at the end of the contract. she said no, and that i would have to call back on the last day.

so i thanked her and hung up. then i called the number again right after. got some sweet southern lady this time. i asked her the same thing, and she said.. oh sure, no problem! put my request in the system, and that was it.
