Tempur-Pedic and other memory foam mattresses

Any first-hand experiences with Tempur-Pedic or lower-priced alternatives?

I actually don't really like them. I find them to be too firm, and it's in a different way than a spring mattress. Spring mattresses still retain a little bounce, but foam seems like it gets really solid.

I'm with Capt on the pillow, but even the decent pillows are like $30 a up.

I have a lot of back pain from a number of different problems, so I've considered the foam mattress tops, but since I plan to get a larger bed soon, it's on hold.

We have the mid-range costco memory foam mattress, and it's super comfy. =)

My chiro told me the pillow top is not good if you have back pain. Firm or extra firm is the best. I have lower back pain and I got a firm with a wood platform underneath and I find that is the best. DO NOT purchase any under mattress "boards" that a mattress store tries to sell you. They are garbage and turn into Ruffles in no time.

Bought a Spring Air Vertapedic memory foam mattress. I could barely tell the difference between it and the Tempur-Pedic when I tried it in-store. Getting it delivered this weekend. Hopefully it's a good investment because I sleep like shit most nights...

So i'm looking to get a memory foam bed as my mattress has finally seen it's sunset. Sleep has gotten pretty bad over the past 6 months and instead of going with some lavish pillowtop I was considering a tempurepedic mattress.

Now I have slept on an actual one which was owned by a girl I was dating. (I use dating loosely). She had the Cloud one or whatever andd hers was about $1600 when I looked it up online. That was a lot to spend on a bed so I started doing research on alternatives and found that the memory foam patent was lost by Tempurepedic hence so many manufacturers. I actually really enjoyed sleeping on that mattress and found the firmness made me knock out much faster. I do have concerns about the heat issue since I am in the hottest room in my house but good sleep > some heat.

I checked out www.sleeplikethedead.com for reviews and have decided on getting Walmart's Spa Sensations 12" model. For around $300 on a queen it's way cheaper than I expected and has good reviews. Probably get this in 2 weeks so I'll update. Anyone have any memory foam mattress stories? Wonki how'd yours work out?
