Argh, a friend just told me about that Spaceland show... I'm not really into +/-, but I would have went because it was free! How was it?

I didn't go either, that's why I was asking...I haven't heard anything about them live. I was curious, but didn't end up making it out.

Is anyone else stoked about The Pattern/Hot Hot Heat show at Spaceland on Wednesday the 16th? What a lineup...

You know about these bands, right? The Pattern's garage soul with ex-Peechee/Lookout! honcho Chris on his knees squealing into the microphen? Victoria's mod-glam HHH explosion sounding like Robert Smith singing for Queen with their new CD on Sub Pop?

Show up or grow up.

hot hot heat is amazing. i saw them at the werepad in sf a few months back. they had the whole damn room dancing. radio4 opened for them and were a little late, so we stood in front of the liquor store down the street for an hour with the bass player from HHH drinkin + smokin cigarettes. he was really nice.

anyways. this past weekend i went to two shows.

black heart procession:
ridiculously awesome band. but for some reason i just haven't been feeling the mellow stuff live lately. if i had a seat i probably wouldn't have been so restless. i've been pretty exhausted lately from school, so standing at shows just makes me even more tired. even still, i'm glad i didn't miss this one.

bright eyes:
conor oberst is a musical genius. well. maybe not. but he sure does put on a great show. the first half of their set was amazing. they had the full 10 piece country orchestra up there. their synchronization is just amazing. they play really well together. the silly girls yelling out "i love you conor!" was pretty annoying. but whatever. good for him. the second half, they busted out all the country tracks off of the new record. so we actually left. i was tired. hungry. didn't feel like squaredancing at the indie rock ho-down. all in all, it was well worth it. and i got to buy my jets tickets for november!

Too bad about Jets cancelling their tour (see FJTB thread), but we had a GR softball game that night anyway. Now we don't have to worry about speeding to the show in our cleats! So selfish, I know.

I'll be right in front of the stage at Spaceland tonight and looking out for some of you. Do to the crummy no-parking zones, I might walk to the show and be looking for a ride back!

Sheee-it. I got to Spaceland at 10:15 (which is pretty early for that place) and there was a huge line going around the sharp corner where the garage is... I kept driving and went to sleep early.

So how was the show?

We got there about 10:30, found a place to park *finally*, walked up to the line and about that time, a guy came out and said "Anyone past this point in the line isn't getting in. We're all sold out." So we didn't get in either.

Where did all those people come from? Was everyone there to see Hot Hot Heat because there weren't nearly that many people when they played at Spaceland just a couple of months ago...

A friend told me it was packed, then loosened up after HHH. Those dummies missed The Pattern.

I should have bought tickets in advance, but paying the extra $$ still doens't seem right for a place like Spaceland. I may be tempted for the Steve McDonald Band, though...

Next up: (I)NC and The Locust.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was mildly interested in seeing HHH, but I'll live. Michelle was pretty bummed out about not being able to see the Pattern tho. It sounds like we should have shown up really late...they probably would have let us in!

I kinda wanted to see Kill Me Tomorrow tonight at the Derby, but we can't make it. Plus they're playing here a bunch of times in the next couple of months...

I don't know what's next up. For sure Cinerama at Amoeba, but there has to be something next week...need to get the LA Weekly today...

Went to The Palace last night to see some bands that were supposed to play the El Rey. The Palace isn't bad because more people can get close. The barrier sucks and so does the stage height, but he can actually see well and the sound is okay.

Got there just in time to see Bluebird's last song. They play full-on classic rock. It was hard to figure out the band's vibe, but didn't they open for Fugazi or Jawbreaker years and years ago?

Next up was Division of Laura Lee, who sound kind of like a mixture of Joy Division and Sonic Youth with the sweeping basslines and guitar textures. I liked how the only one who wasn't a waif was the singer.

The Locust had second billing. Still in their larvae-style outfits, they broke out their spastic, jazzy, hardcore, screamo outbursts and they're still amazing. At first it sounds like random fucking around. Then you realize how tight they are. One of these days I'll have to look at a lyrics sheet and find out what their screeches are all about.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy were last, and they wore sleeveless and studded rock shirts (matching the backdrop) with armbands instead of matching denim suits this time around. They played the same great sweaty, politically charged R&B/punk songs as their last tour ("Smash It Up," "Up for Sale," etc.), but there was some new propaganda. The best story was about how this right-wing mag in Sweden ranked the best and worst songs about freedom. The best? Something by The Scorpions. The worst? "Capitalism Stole My Virginity" by the (I)NC. Awesome. Also, the band is still one of the best live acts in the world, with splits, jumps, and a mission. Oh yeah, they did play one new song, something like "Let's Turn Down the Lights (and Get It On)." Nice.

On a side note, I talked to Louie for a few minutes. He's the drummer I interviewed a few issues back, and there's a picture of him in the Chinese punk article in the new issue. I guess during the Plea for Peace tour, he tweaked his back and the band had to drop out. He went to four doctors and none of them helped. Then he went to an acupuncturist and everyhing's been cool ever since.

The band plays tonight in Pomona, finishing off their Southern California stopover on their way back from an Australian tour, and hits the East Coast next. Go see them.

Next show?

went to see a show at the Talk of the Town here in oakland tonight. it's conveniently located across the street from the taco truck that currently serves the best vegetarian burritos around. open 'til at least 2 in the morning. and for $3 i might add. regularly frequented by us at least 2 nights a week. anyways.

pirx the pilot: great band. i've never heard of them until tonight. my friend swears they're some reincarnation of X. you guys should all definately check them out. male/female vocals. very balanced. and the dude plays a 12 string guitar. insanity! they were handing out samplers after their set. (from New Disorder Records, www.newdisorder.com )

umm. that's all i have to say about tonight. i just finished my burrito. i'm tired. i need sleep.
