Some prospective shows... Anyone going?
Avail at the Roxy. I've seen them a bunch and am a huge fan. The last CD is great, but it hasn't taken over my life like last few. Will listen to it again at a higher volume and reconsider. The opening band has Sergie from Samiam, which may be a factor as well. Pretty Girls Make Graves at the Troubadour. Their EP and newer CD were amazing. So much energy. Anyone know if they pull it off live? Ray Barbee at the New Image Art Gallery (7906 Santa Monica Blvd. #208) on Saturday, November 11 at 7:30. This is at an art show with Evan Hecox, Mark Gonzalez, etc. This one, I'm all over. |

great american music hall - 11/03/02
blanket engine down the dismemberment plan blanket: indie rock band from dc. mediocre. i couldn't get into these guys. musically i guess they were pretty tight. somewhat of a boring set though. engine down: completely amazing. these guys rock out so hard. i was bummed before that i missed the past two shows these guys played out here. (one with cursive, one on the plea for peace tour) the only negative thing i could say about their set was that their bass player broke a string(i think...could have just been technical problems), so he ended up borrowing a bass from the blanket. (keeley called them blankie. i thought that was funny.) i don't remember the set list. mostly everything (if not all of) were off of demure, their latest album. the dismemberment plan: call me crazy, but i was never super into these guys. don't get me wrong, they're a great band and i really like a few of their songs, which they played last night, so i was happy. they sure do put on a great show though. their stage presence is just awesome. and i've always liked how they tend to switch up who's playing what during different songs. overall, this was a well worth it show (even though i ended up not taking the person i wanted to take...well..i ended up not taking anyone at all and meeting up with a friend there) engine down had some neat new shirts. the dplan merch was looking a little weak. oh. and i got there early which allowed me to grab a seat on the balcony next to my friend. certain shows are so much better sitting down. |

slims
tuesday 11/05/02 curl up and die coheed and cambria hot water music thrice was running a little late last night, so by the time we got there, curl up and die had already started. and the place was already packed. we got to catch 15-20 minutes of their set. i was a little sad. i love those guys. the last time i saw them the lead singer (if you count that as singing) knocked basically everything in his staggering path over on stage. these guys have definately been at the top of my playlist for the past 6 months. those guys are so rad and they played an awesome set. you should all definatly check them out. not your typical metalcore/hardcore band. coheed and cambria was up next. i wasn't too excited about seeing these guys. i was mainly just there for the other 3 bands. so as i was waiting in line for the bathroom (the guy's bathroom line was double the size of the girl's one! it was insanity, i tell you.) they start playing. me:"wow....that chick has a hot voice..." so i peek my head out through the doorway to glance at the stage and...surprise! it's a black dude with a teased out afro the width of a good city block. at that point it was time for another beer. anyways, minus the annoying voice, these guys can really really play. leadafrodude's hands were all over the board while he was singing. i was really impressed. overall they were definately the most technical band that played. now it was time for hot water music. i've only seen them play once before. and they topped that this time around. i don't even own any hwm albums, i'm really only familiar with a handful of their songs. but i was into it. my buddy was into it. the whole damn audience was into it. hwm, without a doubt, rocked the house last night. now for our headliners. thrice. this is the 5th time i've seen them play in the past 2 years i think. every show seems to double in size. this time was no exception. slims was filled to capacity. big change from the first time i saw them play to a not so filled audience at the bottom of the hill. the familiar faces i remember from the past few shows were nowhere to be seen. luckily for me, my friend is pretty big, so we managed to push our way into a nice spot in the center, right up to the edge of the stage. the anticipation was heavy. the guys entered like rock stars, with all of the stage lights off. (they even had their own sound tech this time to do soundchecks before they played...rockstars!) bam. once they started playing the crowd erupted. well..erupted as much as they could in the confinement of that cramped space. hell, i was rocking out too. they played an awesome set. the highlights were hearing them play That Hideous Strength (a non album song...very metal! one of my favorites songs of all time), mike minnick from curl up and die coming out to close To Awake and Avenge the Dead with them. he jumped out and we were all screaming into the mic with him. and their encore with the eleanor rigby cover. all in all, it was a great show. the funnest i've been to in a while. i left with a few new shirts. (a curl up and die shirt for my 60year old french boss...he's going to love it.) myself drenched in sweat, ears ringing. and a nice bruised rib. if only every show could be like this. rock n roll. |

Avail is on Thursday, December 5. Yes, that band with Samiam and Texas Is The Reason members is opening... I want to go, but I don't want to pay service charge.
You can get Pretty Girls Make Graves tix at Headline for no surcharge. I drove by on the way to GR but they were still closed at 11:00. What's up with that? Also, there's that new band with Ian and Michelle from The Make Up playin gnext week at the Troub also. Tempted, but I haven't heard the music yet.. |

Yeah, it was the 9th as you figured out. Ray wound up playing a house show instead. It was him with drummer Ben, vibe player Happy, and some drum and guitar loops. You know the cool sounds, and they played two new songs. Only a real jerk wouldn't like Ray's music (as heard in TWS Sight Unseen, etc.).
Also saw Steve Cab play with The Faction on Friday night at the Vans skatepark in Orange. He still rocks the house in his sleeveless Misfits shirt... Tons of skaters everywhere, but none more impressive than in the big pool. Yes, that Ian & Michelle show at the Troub is sounding pretty good now. |

Anyone else make it to the Scene Creamers show last night? It was pretty good. The sound is a lot like the Make Up (duh), but with more psychedelic guitar and pounding drums--less gospel yeh yeah. It can be hard seeing a band when you don't know the songs, but the presense of Ian makes up for lack of familiarity. Some of the songs almost seemed like sequels to Make Up songs. There was one about a judge, for example. The song that stood out for me was, "What About Me? " which was performed after Ian introduced the band, which has Michelle Mae from the Make Up and two people I don't know. "What about me? I'm the singer," he said before going into trembling convulsions and falsettos. New dances were variations of the gorilla and the a meerkat stance atop an amp. Nice...
One more thing, GR is presenting the Mad Capsule Markets at the Whisky on Friday. I'm not an expert in the Japanese trio's music, but they have a crazy high-tech punk rock image and they're supposed to have a great live show. They also have their own Kubricks--not the fake ones like Korn or whomever, but the real thing. |

I just saw the ad in the Village Voice (for NY). I thought it was cool just to see the GR name ablazoned at the top with "presents." But they're doing Tuesday/Wednesday shows. I'm too square to go out on weekdays.
