went to a somewhat last minute matt skiba/mike park show last night. it was interesting. at the cat club on folsom and 8th. yes. why you might ask are mike park and matt skiba playing a club that hosts the bondage-a-go-go? i'ver heard a few reasons. but that's not important.
anyways. so the crowd was very odd. it seemed like a mix of the regular alkaline trio fans i've seen at past shows, and this new audience of frat boys and sorority girls. very annoying frat boys and sorority girls i might add. here's a tip to certain overzealous fan, you don't fucking hip hop dance to an acoustic version of a rock song. getting jiggy with it just doesn't work to music like this. so that, coupled with a very excited and intoxicated monotone screamer who constantly yelled "MATTTTTY...yeahhh..MATTTY...go MATTTTY" made a very interesting audience. where did these people come from? i have no clue. i miss a couple of shows and all of a sudden it goes from a typical pop punk/indie/dare i say emo crowd to a keggering greek frathouse. so minus the annoying people. mike park played a really rad set. he played some old stuff from the blb/sp/chinkees eras, and also the songs off of that ep he put out. it was great. all acoustic. matt skiba also played a good set. acoustic also. i can't remember the set order. i know he played 97, queen of pain, bleeder, goodbye forever, my friend peter, radio...plus his solo songs from the last split. i'm sure i'm leaving a few other songs out. |

More shows...
Friday was Mad Capsule Markets at the Whisky. I haven't been there in a long, long time, and it was totally surpising to see that there are still tons of hair band fans on the Sunset Strip. Now they have piercings and goatees and stuff, though. Oh well. MCM came all the way from Japan, and they were way more melodic and less DHR than I expected. That's good. The main influence wasn't Atari Teenage Riot, which I expected from their image, but NYHC. You know, that sort of rap delivery of hardcore with chugging guitars moving with inertia. Some were punk, other more metallic, and others with some ska influence... Everything was pulled off with tons of energy. What did they sing? Even if I knew Japanese, I probably wouldn't know, but there was a lot of power. No, they don't wear Stormtrooper outfits or anything, but they are rad. Sorry, no Kubricks at the merch table. If you get a chance to see them in NYC, don't miss them, and I'm not just saying that because GR is sort of presenting them. Saturday I missed Jackie and the Cedrics. Sunday was Pretty Girls Make Graves. They were everything that I expected, with explosive instrumentals and female vocals that mix up like Fugazi and Bikini Kill. Really. Live, they pull if off just like on their last CD on Lookout! Records. Too bad they played their best song (with three guy vocals supporting) that's on the ON skateboarding video because everything else (which was still great) was a letdown. Opening was JR Ewing out of Europe. Noisy, loud, stylish, and sassy guys--like you'd expect from GSL. Next up, maybe Steve McDonald. Probably Avail. Definitely Eastern Youth. |

Saw the Steven McDonald Group at Spaceland last night. It was a record release party for SMG's new EP and the re-release of Redd Kross' Neurotica. Part one of the set was SMG, with a few super old RK songs ("Pseudo Intellectual," etc.). It was sweet and crunchy pop like kids cereal with lots of energy like Total. Steve handles the front role well and Anna W. came out to sing backup for one song. If you liked Redd Kross, you'd like it. If you liked Redd Kross you would have loved the second part of the set. Robert Hecker played guitar and Roy McDonald came out for drums--no Jeff McDonald--and they played songs off Neurotica like "Love Is You," "Neurotica," "Frosted Flake," "Peach Kelli Pop," and "What They Say." The singer for the Posies came out to sing Jeff's part in one song! The entire set was great with Robert playing his guitar as high as his voice, Roy pounding the drums like no other, and Steve being the rock star he is--even without his brother mirroring his moves. The songs still sound great. If you never caught Redd Kross, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. But Redd Kross were/are much more than a '70s rock band--they are like rock personified.
Next: Avail. |

I'm going to Avail in LA, but I think in SD they're playing with Eastern Youth. If you live right in between the two cities, you might want to go south to check out EY because they're an amazing live band from Japan that you don't get to see much.
