Too Much Screen Time Can Make Computer Users Sick
November 05, 2002 06:03 PM ET NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The more time an office worker toils in front of a computer, the more likely he or she is to suffer a host of physical, mental and sleep-related ills, Japanese researchers report. While video display terminal (VDT) use has become commonplace in many types of jobs, there is little information on how long a person can safely use a computer each day. To investigate, Dr. Tetsuya Nakazawa of Chiba University and colleagues surveyed over 25,000 office workers who responded to three questionnaires between 1995 and 1997. Participants answered questions about the amount of time they spent in front of a VDT, their sleep habits, and physical and mental ailments including headache, low back pain, eyestrain, depression and anxiety. Their findings are published in the October issue of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. "In our study, we found a significant relationship between duration of daily VDT use and physical symptoms," even after adjusting for other factors that could influence the results, the authors write. Office workers stuck in front of a computer most commonly complained of headache, eyestrain, joint pain and stiff shoulders. Mental symptoms such as lethargy, anxiety and "reluctance to go to work," as well as sleep-related problems including insomnia and fatigue, were most common among workers who spent more than 5 hours a day glued to their computer screen. "This result suggested that the effect of duration of daily VDT use on these scores has a threshold effect, and the prevention of mental disorder and sleep disorder requires the restriction of VDT use to less than 5 hours per day," the researchers write. While the type of computer work the study participants performed varied considerably, as did the size of the computer used and the work environment, "it should be emphasized that even under such working conditions, our results were extremely consistent over a 3- year period," Nakazawa and colleagues note. The researchers call for more research into the relationship between computer use and physical, mental and sleep symptoms. SOURCE: American Journal of Industrial Medicine 2002;42:421-426.

if i'm not mistaken, i seem to remember aol doing this on the pc as well, but instead of using stuffit compression, it used zip compression. must be an option in the aol client control panel/preferences?

oh... that stuffit. i was detracted by the extra "s" in stuffs it.
don't they do a mime conversion too? it would only make sense to. yeah if its a different compression then a change in configuration should fix that. nix the test picture send gallerygirl unless you really want to do it. check your settings and look for a "mime" option for email attachments.

try creating a citrix app domain group, add the users you want to access the app to that group, and specify that group read and execute rights to the prog executable directory

wifi future changes............
The Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), which certifies IEEE 802.11 wireless networking products with the Wi-Fi marketing label, announced today that it has ratified a new standard for wireless security. Dubbed Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), the technology will replace the compromised Wireless Equivalency Protocol (WEP) security technology found in most existing Wi-Fi products today. Most Wi-Fi vendors will offer WPA upgrades to existing products through firmware updates. "Enterprises, small businesses and home users need a stronger standards-based security solution than WEP and they need it now," says WECA chairman Dennis Eaton. "[WECA] worked with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 Standards Working Group for Wireless Local Area Networks to deliver a robust wireless LAN security solution meeting the immediate needs of the marketplace. This approach allows the industry to bring a strong, standards-based security solution to the market today while giving the IEEE 802.11 Task Group I the time to complete and finalize the full 802.11i Robust Security Network amendment to the existing wireless LAN standard. Security is, and will continue to be, the highest priority for the Wi-Fi Alliance and for the industry." WEP is currently available in 11 Mbps 802.11b and 54 Mbps 802.11a products from a wide range of manufacturers, but the technology was compromised almost immediately, making it fairly easy for hackers to bypass security on many wireless networks. The new scheme, WPA, is based on several different strong algorithms for encrypting network traffic, though the WECA hasn't yet provided many details of how the technology works.

For PHP... https://www.redhat.com/support/resou...-FAQ/c484.html For MySQL... https://www.redhat.com/support/resou...-FAQ/c497.html Hopefully, this should get you started. Also, make sure you're using a firewall (if you aren't already). I maintain the external company servers and one in the morning logs, I see so many attempts at getting at services through the firewall... It's frightening. Also, if you haven't, keep your system updated with the up2date program. It's free!

ok, what's up with this?
my computer once in a while lets it rip with the cpu for no discernible reason... i mean, all i'm using is word, a have 2 browsers open, i have music match jukebox going and let's say i'm downloading some things... but there are times where all i have is word going and the cpu usage goes thru the roof. all for no reason. what the heck is up with THAT? can someone give me a reason this could be happening?

MS Word sucks! Windows sucks. It does that on my computer, too. My guess is poor CPU resource handling on the part of Windows. and the fact that MS Word SUX!
BTW, I'm running NT4.0 SP6a and Office 97.

But, damn, as soon as I run Word. All hell breaks loose.

try 2000, much better memory management
nt4 is the reason why most slashdotters and mac users bash windows, its crashes way too often, you have to reboot when you change your tcp ip settings, you basically have to reboot after every config change even something like adding a path, and when an app hangs, it hangs your whole machine, it doesnt auto detect hardware changes, and everytime you install a new service, application, you have to reapply the latest service pack again and all the post service pack fixes, and theres like 50 of them.
