Do you guys have the UAC on Windows 7 enabled? I'm trying to get PeerBlock to startup when I boot, but I think the UAC is preventing it from doing so.

I have UAC enabled.

There's probably a way around it. Though I'm not sure how. PeerBlock doesn't offer any solutions in an FAQ?

I recently got fed up with an app under Vista that won't run unless you're the administrator and found a trick where you can make it run without the UAC always prompting you but it required setting up a dummy scheduled task that starts the app for you...

Yeah, I read about that scheduled task workaround. Seems like a hassle just to get something started at boot-up.

Didn't think about reading the FAQ. I'll check it out, and they've probably got a forum too.

you might have to add an exception to Windows Firewall.

I had to ditch my old computer (the one running Ubuntu) because it failed and wouldn't boot. I bought a Windows 7 laptop. There are a bunch of files on the old HDD that I wanted to rescue, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure and installed the drive into it.

Windows 7 "recognizes" the external drive but doesn't assign it a drive letter. And the only thing Disk Management allows me to do with the drive is to "delete volume".

Suggestions?

win7 probably does not support the linux filesystem out of the box

Can someone explain to me what the difference between a NAS and a home server is?

I want a box where I can save all my files to, backup my computers, download torrents, and stream music/HD movies.

A NAS (Network Attached Storage) tends to be a box that has storage and just enough smarts to offer the data over the network via Windows Networking, NFS, FTP, etc.

A home server tends to be a more feature-full system offering NAS plus, for instance, Windows Media Center and other media streaming applications. Plus other stuff.

In general, a NAS has enough smarts to provide the data on the network and make it accessible. A home server will tend to do that and then some.

the next version of Windows Home Server is supposed to be awesome. i would wait. but really, i don't think you need it, unless you have multiple computers in your house and you all want to have a central location for storing/streaming media.

a NAS would be sufficient for your immediate needs. i've got my eyes on the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. Fry's occasionally sells the 1TB version for $250. Amazon frequently has rebates on it..

That looks interesting. I've read the reviews on Amazon and Newegg and it seems some people have had trouble setting it up. Hmmm, but the price is right. Gotta think about it.
