I wouldn't upgrade to Win2K even if I could. This laptop I have for work is an IBM ThinkPad 300E (233 MHz P2). Too freakin' old.

I want newer & faster.

Anyone use Mandrake? I'm having a problem setting my internet connection up using Mandrake on my other pc. Not a big deal but I'm hoping to ween myself off of Microsoft stuff. Any better linux os that I should be running?

Maybe I'll have to check out the new Red Hat. Thanks for the tip.

Anyone else?

You can download the RedHat 8 ISO CD images for FREE!

Go to http://www.redhat.com and click the link at the top right of the page labelled "Download". There should be a further link on the next loaded page with info and instructions.

man, that Red Hat download takes forever. none of the mirror sites have version 8 yet. so you're stuck downloading from the Red Hat server.

ack, it did it again.

background services? my task manager lists a bunch of applications that i can't seem to figure out. but each of them never go past 1 or 2 k. wouldn't spyware show up under there too? is there by any chance a cookie-cop type program that'll detect spyware?

Shit, Slackerbot, go to http://www.freshrpms.net. Scroll down a bit, there should be a link on the left to see a list of mirrors for psyche (that's the Red Hat 8 kernel).

The ftp server I've been using is redhat.newaol.com. It's freakin' fast. I've been downloading the ISO images in about 3 hours per CD.

Try this:

http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=7

They have mirrors for 8. That's where I just got it...
