slackerbot: how has that IBM thinkpad been working out for you? I'm scared about using a service like ebay to purchase a lappy. Does it come with a warrenty? It's an option I may look into. If I can save some cash for a comparable product, I may do it.

that's what i mean kamen. is it safe when it's plugged in and hanging free with nothing attached to it? i know firewire supplies electrical current for whatever device it is connected to, but i don't remember seeing a warning label about electrocution risks. seems like all the ipods being sold and used the world over that somewhere some little kid is going to stick the firewire cord in it's mouth. or me at four in the morning after too many ales absentmindedly chewing on the bare metal plug thinking it's my headphone cord. (i do this)

do not go vga with a decent lcd.

go for a 20" with 1600x1200, or go dual 17's/18's running 1280x1024. cost of each set up is the about the same.
