my latest thing is "Sakigake! Kromartie High School" by Nonaka Eiji
It's a fucked up and very pop culture-informed saga of a low-level high school filled with tough guys, gorillas, robots, Freddie Mercury on horses, and lots of music references. Super hilarious but I don't think its in English yet. As I read it I have been contemplating translating it though

also "Jimihen" by Nakazaki Tatsuya
Short two-pagers about modern ineptitude.

I was on a Otomo Katsuhiro [Akira] tip recently reading his older stuff before he went all post-apocalyptic, and a few when he was getting into the Akira precursors stuff like:

Short Peace-
dealing with rape, dreams of war, and finding oneself in the 70s.

Sayonara Nippon-
about Japanese living in New York in the 70s and Western cultural perceptions of being Japanese vs. varying culture among Japanese themselves.

SOS Daitokyo Tankentai [Greater Tokyo Expedition Force]-
about kids spelunking Tokyo sewers.

Doom [written with the character for a blinded male slave and the character for dream]-
Akira-esque story about a kid and old man with psychic powers and apocalyptic destruction [confined to a set of projects/public housing]

The original is a classic but this has now been eclipsed in my estimation by Blade of the Immortal. This book is amazing and Samura's art and storytelling skills never cease to impress me.

oh man I gotta second this. Blade of the Immortal is in my opinion the best ongoing series in comics right now. It's incredible on so many levels- the story is gripping, the art is fucking fantastic, all the characters are believable and fleshed out, plus it comes out every single month like clockwork (that counts a lot in today's comics climate.) I have every single issue, I was hooked from issue one. Get the trades if you haven't read this yet and you're remotely into samurai stuff, you will not regret it.

Yeah, what he said

Blade of the Immortal really gets to me. Samura is really good at drawing the characters sitting around doing nothing which makes it even better when he kicks off one of his incredible action scenes. Poor Shinriji turned out to be pretty good in the end. I was sick at Haykurin's ordeal but I cheered out loud when Giichi came to the rescue. Don't even get me started on Magatsu going toe to toe with Shira.

If you don't know what I hell I'm babbling about you need to go get the trades immediately. Like tonybricker said, you will not regret it.

Nathaniel, Are you talking about "Domu"? That was the title of it when it was released here by Dark Horse...

I just got all 5 volumes of MATSUMOTO's Ping Pong manga this week and am trying to slowly read them. My nihongo skills suck ass, so i think i'll make my bf read them along with me. That's how we read part of Tokyo Tribe until he got bored with it.
The action shots in this series are awesome. Brows breaking out in sweat, limbs and paddles flying. wowu.

What's the deal with GTO? Kids love that series. It sells well at my bf's store. When I was at the video store, I thought of renting the series dvd but the first volume was out, so i forgot about it...

i love SAMURA's pencils and washes on "Blade" but has anyone seen his stuff on "Hikoshi" (moving)? His modern day work is pretty good looking too. i love his bad ass girls with guns and bats.

Wondering if anyone else is reading any shojo Gen-x high school type of manga like Q? or checking out anthologies like Garo and Ax?

I'm feeling you!! Shinriji rocked it, he took out more Itto Ryu guys than like anybody but Manji has so far! Who wouldda thunk it? And I was all excited when Geicchi went after Hyakurin, although I would have lied to have seen a better fight between him and the big blind guy. Geicchi just took him out no problem, but then again that makes him that much more badass. I wonder how he'd do against Anotsu...?

and Magatsu against Shira has had me more excited than anything in the entire story to this point.

Yeah, I think we are talking about the same thing. I'm not really aware of what is released in English or not cuz everything here is well...Japanese.

??
this right?

I checked up on the translation. The first character can also mean child....rendering the title "A child's dream" or something. The same characters get used to transliterate "dorm" and "dome" on the web....I think I am too used to bands using characters chinese style to write other stuff and came up with "Doom" Cool manga though eh?

I want the Ping Pong DVD!! I haven't read the manga but I have read Tekkin concrete and GoGo Monster by the same author.

Do you like Umezu Kazuo? [Hyouryuu Kyoshitsu] 'drifting classroom'? is awesome.

I dunno what the appeal of GTO is to other people, but to me it's just charming because it's about a normal, abnormal guy.

What was so cool was that Shinriji had the chance to run but he didn't and when he took on the Itto-Ryu he used their numbers and the confines of the room against them instead of just turning into an amazing kenshi all of a sudden.

That panel at the end of the issue when Haykurin realises she ought to run and then sees the Itto ryu coming in led by the huge blind guy was full of foreboding. You just knew things were going to get nasty. Samura made the torture scenes suitably horrific without being overly explicit.

I dunno how Giichi would do against Anotsu but he rules with the shades and the bald head. He's nearly as cool as Magatsu. I found it interesting that the best fighter in the saga so far is Makie Otono Tachibana from Dreamsong. This isn't your normal samurai story.
