I dont know about CC anymore. For a while, I was all about getting the films they've pressed.

Then there are just movies that have no innovative value, they just happen to be done by a distinguished director/producer/actor etc...
or foreign.

Then also, they stop pressing films like John Woo's movies, Sid & Nancy, Robocop, Blood for Dracula, Flesh for Frankenstein, The Harder They Come, Spinal Tap. (Yes, Robocop 2, + all stank like raw feces)

so...
Kurosawa
Fellini
Bergman

oh yeah, no Night of the Living Dead? WTF.
If its not the only DVD press, I dont see much reason to waste 10-20 extra dollars on buying it.

They didn't stop for no reason. They lost the reproduction rights to those films. In the case of Salo (although CC denies this) they were brought under scrutiny by decency rights people...

In order for CC to release anything, they have to go through all the legal red tape bullshit with the movie studios or filmmaker's estate. In the case of the discontinued DVDs, it's because the Hollywood executives or art estate holders have said no. It depends on the contract.

Verhoeven's Robocop was absolutely fucking brilliant. 2 was shit. I don't think CC would ever release a 2. Or did they?

There's always been discussion and questions regarding CC's selection process (it's really one guy's company). Especially CC's hand in the Michael Bay's movies. The conclusion has always been that they needed the money at the time and sold out.

It's public domain. I don't think criterion would be able to make money off a Night of the living dead DVD. Because nobody owns the rights to it.

I consider Criterion the cream of the crop when it comes to DVD releases, and I would be happy to hear of someplace better. After watching the only scratchy, fuzzy, terrible VHS release of Seven Samurai, the CC version is an amazing jump. At the same time, I am a little pissed they are releasing it again....but by their words, only because the technology has gotten better in restoration. This will probably be my first repeat purchase.

My collection?

Seven Samurai

High and Low

Branded to Kill

Tokyo Drifter

Hidden Fortress

8 1/2

M

(This is) Spinal Tap

The Killer

Beastie Boys Video Anthology

^Kino Internationl / Kino on Video has good releases, too. Just not the fancy packaging (we've actually approached them a while back about design... but they're not as receptive as the head honcho at Criterion, who prides himself on great design) and extensive production values and endless director reviews.

But here's the thing for me. I rarely watch Director's commentary. It spoils my experience of the film sometimes.

Kino's hit and miss for me. I wanted Criterion to release more Seijun Suzuki movies, as thier releases were fantastic...but then when I saw the Taisho Trilogy that Kino did.....and well done by Kino, but the movies are terrible.

Just curious: there's an original Criterion "Seven Samurai" and now I see a new, more expensive Criterion version of the film.

Is it worth it to get this newer release?

Oh, and I've got "The Royal Tenenbaums", "The Life Aquatic", "Pygmallion", "Throne Of Blood", and "Yojimbo".

Wish they'd put one out for "BladeRunner".

The new release is a new remastering, so you are getting a new DVD and not just a copy of the earlier release.

It's also a 3 disc set (as opposed to the original which was 1 disc) with considerable material. It includes a long interview with Akira Kurowsawa.

Rumor has it that Salo is being rereleased. Thatt's going to affect the current price of the OOP disc.

Too bad. I thought I'd heard a rumor about a year back that "Blade Runner" would get the "Brazil" treatment. That is, a 3-disc set with the director's cut, the happy-ending/voiceover cut, and a disc of extra features.
