i think gomi has a background in wrestling so this might be a wrestling match. i'm not sure though.

if it was a sub-grappling then he would probably go for a lock or choke. i'm guessing of course.

i don't know about that. i could be wrong but i don't think they practice catch wrestling in japan. then again, i heard gotch taught some stuff that led to shoot fighting so there could be some relation.

since the last time i posted, i saw gomi in a few matches. he's in the shooto organization. he's pretty aggressive with the standup striking. i was surprised that he was pushing hard against a dominant fighter like rumina sato.

that picture isn't shooto though. there's wrestling gear and a ref.

Yes but u don't submit people in normal folk/freestyle wrestling. Besides one can argue that Puroseau and all that were very much influenced by Karl Gotch. Especially considering that Japanese prowrestling predates the Gracie explosion, and Judo during that time was very much doing its own thing. Besides Gotch did influence the begininings of shoot fighting like you said and that has always went hand in hand with Japanese Pro Wrestling.

They don't necessarily call it catch wrestling, but the fighting styles of a lot of Japanese MMA fighters like Sakuraba are more catch wrestling influenced than say BJJ influenced in my opinion.

Gomi is now contracted by Pride Bushido I don't think he's still with Shooto, but he might be.

Either way its clearly not a BJJ, Sambo, or MMA event given the enviroment. And its clearly not Judo, or traditional wrestling I don't think Catch Wrestling is a bad approximation, or some form at least.

BTW the move he's doing is I think his own personal technique that he nicknamed "the serpent."

yeah. catch is one of the closest guesses when compared to the other styles. i wonder if the japanese have a name for it.

i thought gomi was going to be the man. but penn beat him here last year.
