the official metal thread

and i'm not talkin' about that nu-metal shiznit either. I'm talkin' about shit like Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Vio-lence, Forbidden, D.R.I., Nuclear Assault, etc. or, if you want to include some of these other grindcore/death metal groups like Entombed, Gorguts, Malevolent Creation, Immolation, etc.

I know it hasn't really gone away but I'm curious what happened to some of these bands, especially groups like Vio-lence, Death Angel and pretty much and of these bands that emerged during the late 80's/early 90's.

More importantly, will we see a revival of this scene? I'm curious to hear Dave Grohl's new band Probot. It's kinda cool seeing someone like him still embracing his metal roots and giving credit to groups like Venom, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead & the like.

whuchu think?

I've been meaning to pick up a King Diamond CD (geez, I always say that). My best friend is way into 'em.

I had some D.R.I. records when I was a kid but I'm not into 'em anymore.

I'm finding the list of bands so far lacking, and in some places misplaced.

DRI? I guess they became metal, sort of.

I saw Death Angel a couple of years ago, and I saw them in their heyday. A couple of the band members were, or are, in a band called Swarm. I saw them, didn't like them a bit.

Why wasn't Exodus mentioned? Not that Toxic Waltz crap, but Bonded By Blood.

sort of? DRI's first 2 albums were very metal....remember Thrash Zone?

my list isn't a definitive list. there are so many genres and sub-genres it's hard to tell who's who. I guess groups like Exodus, Testament, Overkill & sepultura would fall into the thrash/speed metal genre. King Diamond/Mercyful Fate are more goth/doom metal....then there's the whole death metal scene to contend with as well.

I dunno, I was just throwing some names out...not necessarily trying to be specific.

I saw DRI at the farm in SF long ago. They were not metal.

Wasn't meaning to trash your list, it just seemed a little off balance.

My brother would have a better handle on this. Myabe I can get him to post something.

DRI was my first concert ever and I thought they were very metal, but I guess it's whatever you make of it. I'm sure a large number of people might consider them punk but I can't speak for their later material as I haven't heard it.

Does grindcore count? I mean Carcass are definitely metal of a sort, and Napalm Death seemed to get more and more metal with time.

Nuclear Assault and Excel played at the very first show I ever went to.

Interesting too because they played before an O.C. straight edge hardcore band who were in the process of going in a more "emo" direction (Uniform Choice) and a D.C. hardcore band who, not coincidentally, were in the process of going in a more "emo" direction (Dag Nasty).

What King Diamond CD(s) should I get?

My best friend swears by Them. He says it may be the best concept album he's ever heard.

If you also want to listen to what contemporaries look to for metal-spiration, you absolutely must listen to Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd.
