You ain't a real metal fan if you don't have any Sabbath in your collection.

people have their own preferences I guess. My first KD album was Abigail but I was also quite fond of Fatal Portrait...you'd probably like both of them. I stopped listening to his stuff after The Eye (1990) and haven't heard any of his newer albums. Or, if you want to go further back check out his Mercyful Fate stuff....Melissa is a classic album.

I first heard Mercyful Fate back in 84 or 85. I thought it was hilarious.

well, Mercyful Fate and King Diamond aren't everyone's cup of tea. I thought they kinda funny too when I first heard them and then started to like it. It's an acquired taste I guess.

DRI

DRI first two albums were definitly not metal
"DRI" self titled and "dealing with it" are 80's hardcore punk classics.
The next album "crossover" is when they started to add metal riffs to the guitars and songs became longer I think this was 1996. They also grew thier hair and became more cheezy metal looking.
The crossover sound (hardcore punk and metal combined) contined with "4 of a kind" and "thrash zone" all good but thier early hardcore days were the best for me.
I saw DRI 3 times in the 80's all awesome shows, pretty rough if I remember cause the cheezymetalheads didnt know how to slamdance and stage dive very well. lots of fights with them getting pounded on by skins.

The only metal that mattered was SLAYER.
crossover metal/hardcore was shortlived and DRI was the only band that did a good job of it.

I guess you can count Suicidal Tendencies as crossover as well starting with the 2nd album "join the army"

never got into John Bush...his vocals were a bit too glam metal for my tastes back then. Not that Joey Belladonna's were any better, but he was the original so you kinda got used to his singing.

whatever happened to Billy Milano and M.O.D./S.O.D.?

Don't they reunite for shows in New York from time to time?

Both played at a show a few years ago at the Maritime Hall in SF. So did Exodus, Death Angel, Anthrax and a bunch of other bands.

Billy Milano was the emcee of the show.

anaal nathrakh - codex necro

the record would be a classic only for "pandemonic hyperblast" but all the songs fucking rule. Very nicely produced. Listen to it in headphones. There is noise comming from everywhere. Very fast death/necro metal with sequencers.

from the same country as venom

excellent thread.

didn't vio-lence, death angel, testament, and a bunch of other bay area thrash bands play that benefit fest for chuck billy a few years back in SF? I saw some video footage of the Vio-lence set, and it was pretty cool.

My old band played New England Metal fest this past year, we were up right before DRI, and I was really excited about watching them. They ended up not showing, which sucked.

Mostly the stuff I'm listening to these days, in regards to metal/grind:
Entombed, Black Sabbath, Pig Destroyer, Morgue (Process to Define the Shape of Self Loathing...earlier is not so good from what i hear...?) Sleep, Khanate, Cult of Luna, and some of the more "metal" influenced Japanese hardcore bands, SDS, GISM, etc...
