umm, sorry, I would like to meet these said purists........because it's pretty much universally lauded by most media that the pinnacle of jazz was around the mid 50's to early 60's.........w/ the start of labels like Blue note (Alfred Lion) and Impulse (Creed Taylor). Out of this hard bop generation spawned the careers of people like Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, and so on and so on.....

I think it'll be pretty hard for jazz to reach back to that level again....

Is that the general cut off line most "purists" draw the line at?
There are purists for each era I imagine. The traditional jazz purists are the ones I'm siding with. But yeah, I don't like any modern jazz at all, and that's generally considered from the 50's and on.

You know, y'all are exhibiting the kind of behaviour that made me steer clear of the whole jazz thing in the first place.

Just thought I'd add to the debate, like.

Heed the music, not the self-professed fans of. Also, ignore this post; it will self-destruct in 10 looks.

^An excerpt from the above site:

"Here's one approach that I recommend to anyone starting out: Six Degrees of Miles. Here's how it works:

Start buying Miles Davis recordings. The aforementioned KOB is a good place to start. Look at the listing of the sidemen. Get to know their contributions to the Miles discs, and then look for recordings by the sidemen. That'll take you a long way."

Brilliant!

Ain't got no kick against modern jazz.

Unless they try to play it too darn fast.
