The great thing about editing is that now I don't feel guilty about watching TV or movies as much as I used to. Especially with Tivo, if I see an interesting sequence, I'll watch it frame by frame to see what made it work. Especially with super flashy stuff like transitions on reality shows (like change of time or location, when they stuff B-roll in between two scenes... Project Runway did cool shit with with these transitions...), commercials, trailers, and music videos. Movies are great, too, obviously, but I feel like with great movies it's a bit more abstract, it's not about the mechanics with them, they're more about the emotions. In those cases, the cuts are almost invisible. I'd like to hear editors talk about what they were feeling at the time, what they were trying to evoke. But actions movies are great just for sheer technique, the flashy kind of technique. Like Man on Fire, you should watch that with the sound off.

when i was younger, i was really affected by that scene in the untouchables in the subway station where they're waiting to intercept the accountant, and there's that baby carriage etc..
we taped it off tv and i think i watched and rewatched that scene a lot, made me really think about editing and composition and what makes something work..

can anybody point me in the direction of an article or site dealing with avi compression? codecs and stuff?
i need to convert a vob file to edit [done] and now need to convert to avi and i'm not sure which codec to use for compression [if it even really matters].. i'm using mpeg streamclipper on mac..

thanks!
so the recieving end also needs the codec, right? so there's advantages in using the most common ones if you're planning on wide distribution or not sure of what the receiving end has.

Right, everyone has to have the codec installed. But, depending on what you're doing, you could save it out using one of the codecs I mentioned, then import it and save it out as a Microsoft DV, or Panasonic, or whatever. Microsoft DV is probably the most widely used if you're talking about shipping the footage around to a bunch of people. But by doing that, you're moving it to a lossy format.
Usually my workflow is rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter, convert it to an avi using VirtualDubMod, import it into Premiere or AE, do my edits, export out to MPEG2. That way it only gets recompressed at the end. |

^ The chroma keying is kind of cool. "Placeshifting" is a stupid name. Overall, it seems like a great way for people just getting into video editing (if they're on a PC), but shit like this:
"Audio/Video Sync-lock Ensure your video and audio are locked in time with state-of-the-art A/V sync-lock technology." Cracks me up. It's like when the Home Shopping Network talks about "this computer comes with internet."
