But compare, say, a factory worker, one who is in a union and one who isn't. The one in the union, even with their union dues, are taking home way more money. It's like in Hollywood, an actor might be paying his agent 10 percent, his manager and lawyer also get a cut, and you might ask "why do should they pay these people?" But 70% of $500,000 or 1 million or even 15 million is better than 100% of $1000 or nothing. The union IS the reason some people make a living or middle class wage. I'm hoping to get into a union soon. It's only a matter of time. I'll gladly pay my dues. They enforce overtime pay, provide dynamite health care, will be your advocates if some production company is gaming the system. Of course they need dues, political influence must be bought and the people who want to treat every worker like an intern are outspending the working class by a shit ton.

Oh, I have a writer friend. His career isn't doing so hot at the moment, but he still has management, is still actively working on projects, pitching ideas when he's not waiting tables. I'm not making fun of him, I actually think how he's handled his career's stalling is the most admirable thing I know about him.
Anyway, he's kind of got right wing tendencies, still thinks there were WMD's in Iraq and America is in the middle east trying to spread freedom. Well, one day he was ripping on unions, how they're greedy and have too much power. This fucker is in the Writer's Guild. In fact, he when one of Joel Silver's companies tried to bone him on some residuals, the Writer's Guild went after them for nearly a year, sending him a letter every so often telling him they were still pursuing the matter. Joel Silver claimed they had made no profits on the movie therefor didn't owe him any royalties, and WGA suspected differently since this kind of "creative" accounting is a standard industry practice. Turns out they did owe him money, and so one day he got a check for about $74,000. It was a direct to DVD movie, so he wasn't going to get rich, but that money saved his ass. This guy is against unions. Meanwhile, the WGA is trying to get companies to honor their contractual agreements with him and providing him and his wife some of the best health care in the country (acupuncture, anyone?). Same with Adam Carolla ranting about unions on his show. I'm sure he's in the Producer's Guild, Writer's Guild, and SAG. Not sure what the fuck he's talking about. The whole union thing isn't about being against the idea of people being allowed, in a democracy, to unify to pursue a common interest. It's about hating other Americans. Other phantom, lazy, lying Americans. They're cool with unions and healthcare for themselves (remember the "keep your government hands off my medicare" sign?) but the people in power has used propaganda to divide us to conquer us, and mostly they've done that by making Americans believe they, and their closest friends, are the true Americans, and everybody else is a lazy, lying, possibly even gay, fuck.

It's par for the course. My great-grandfather was a union man and he thought his union was okay, but if he heard about anyone else going on strike, well, they were communists.
But I think the unions have partly done it to themselves by spending the past four decades supporting politicians who just keep selling union members and working people in general down the river (the Wisconsin recall being the most recent case).

Any more so than captains of industry or politicians? I doubt it. Although unions may all be corrupt as they exist now, it remains true that without the ability to bargain collectively it's been explicitly demonstrated that industry will drive wages and benefits as low as they can. If people don't have a problem with this then they probably should be against unions.

The other night, he basically said he didn't believe in media consolidation, and all the misinformation and suppression of truth that might entail.

Single recent out of africa migration theory of modern human origins probably wrong
http://dienekes.blogspot.com/2012/07....html?spref=fb
http://dienekes.blogspot.com/2011/04...of-humans.html Basically, humans probably emigrated out of Africa much earlier than 60,000 years ago, and we interbred with different species in different areas, and populations migrated back and forth. We have varying degrees of Neanderthal and Denisovan admixture. |
