Sonya Thomas is thin. At 5 feet 5 inches and 99 pounds, the Alexandra, Va., resident is one of those people about whom you think, "She must eat like a bird." And, in fact, she does, but only because birds supposedly eat twice their body weight in food.

Not surprisingly, her name notwithstanding, Thomas is Korean. Have you ever gone out for Korean BBQ? How did you feel when you left the table? Full? I thought so. (I once asked a Korean friend whether her parents approved of her white boyfriend (now husband), and she sighed and said, "Well, he's a good eater, so that was good.")

Thomas, South Korean born, 37 years old and single, is the No. 1 female competitive eater in the United States. She is ranked second in the world, with 22 world titles, and regularly outeats men four and five times her size in contests held throughout the year, earning the self-appointed moniker the Black Widow."

A Japanese speed-eating champion has claimed the title in a Hong Kong dumpling-eating contest.

Takeru Kobayashi polished off 83 of the steamed vegetarian dumplings in eight minutes, easily beating Hong Kong's Johnny Wu into second place with 76.

Mr Kobayashi will take on the best six competitors in a final pork bun eating race on Sunday.

The 27-year-old is known as the hot dog king after winning a hot dog eating event in New York five years in a row.

HONG KONG -- Japan's champion speed-eater devoured 100 roast pork buns in 12 minutes in the final round of an eating contest in Hong Kong on Sunday.

Takeru Kobayashi, 27, plowed through the Chinese steamed buns to easily beat five other local contestants, pocketing a cash prize of 20,000 Hong Kong dollars ($2,574). First runner-up Johnny Wu, 34, finished 47 buns.

Kobayashi -- who weighs just 144 pounds -- said the palm-sized buns posed more of a challenge than the 83 vegetarian dumplings he downed in eight minutes on Saturday.

The Japanese speed-eater is the five-time international hot dog-eating champion, and holds the world record after wolfing down 53 1/2 frankfurters in 12 minutes.
