Sister Cities Solo Exhibition by Ako Castuera
July 29th - Aug 16th, 2017 Reception July 29th 7-10pm.
Sister Cities is a sprawling collection of new work by Ako Castuera featuring elements of human, animal, landscape and architecture. An array of hybrid sculptural forms describe a world of softened borders in which connections between people, place, self and other are joyfully expressed and valiantly defended against the gnarly tides of nationalism, bigotry and defeatist passivity.
Giant Robot has been the heart of a loose woven but vital collection of artists, writers, museums and cultural entities that Ako is happy to count herself a part of. It has celebrated her work in many settings including the Oakland Museum of California, Japanese American National Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Vincent Price Museum.
On a happy note, Obon festival is taking place on the same day as the opening, and will be just 1 block away at the West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple (2003 Corinth Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90025). Extra parking will be available at the Trident Center located Corinth and Mississippi.
