[nggallery id=33]     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Group Art Show Opening Real Japanese Kawaii February 5 – March 2, 2011 Reception: Saturday, February 5, 6:30 – 10:00 p.m. GRSF 618 Shrader Street San Francisco, CA 94117 gr-sf.com 415-876-4773 In conjunction with Sweet Streets, Giant Robot is proud to host a group show by Shibuya Girls Pop, a new Tokyo-based artist collective featuring 12 female artists: Nana Aoyama, Eimi, Sayaka Iwashimizu, Marrontic, Hiroshi Mori, NICO, Keiko Ogawa, Ra’yka, Shinjuko, Yuki Takahashi, Kayo Tamaishi, and TAMMY. Real Japanese Kawaii will be the collective’s first American exhibition together. Kawaii is loosely translated as “cute” in English, but it actually means much more. To the Shibuya Girls Pop artists, kawaii is like holding onto a piece of happiness in a world with uncertain future and, in Japan, the concept is fast becoming a revolution. The mix of new names and established artists in the Tokyo scene (such as Nana Aoyama, a.k.a. Marie, whose art has been featured on Anna Sui’s fashion runway, and Shinjuko, who is famous for her Harajuku Lovers illustrations) will provide a deeper look into the meaning of kawaii through their hyper cool, pop-saturated new paintings. Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based magazine about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as an online equivalent. An opening reception will take place on 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, February 5, and feature free kawaii makeup tutorials by Sugarpill Cosmetics (as seen in Japanese brand 6%DOKIDOKI’s 2010 fashion show). Ming Ong is an artist and graphic designer whose artwork reflects her international upbringing and inclusive worldview. Her paintings often depict children and animals in disquieting situations, juxtaposing bright colors and nostalgic children’s book illustration with dark subject matter and serious themes.
