[nggallery id=82]   Vote for Survival at GR2 October 18 – November 12 Reception: Saturday, October 18, 6:30 -10:00 GR2 2062 Sawtelle Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025 gr2.net (310) 445-9276 Giant Robot is proud to present Vote for Survival, an art show featuring new work by Nikki McClure. First making a name for herself as a solo musician in the early ’90s, McClure has redefined herself as a visual artist by creating stunning works of art out of single sheets of paper with a common X-Acto knife. Instilling the somewhat Asian art form of paper cutting with the populist themes of punk rock, Riot Grrl, and motherhood, the Olympia-based artist has created distinctive pieces for album covers, book covers, a successful series of self-published calendars and postcards, handmade publications, and gallery shows. Vote For Survival is an art tour traveling by train, making stops on the West Coast: Olympia, San Francisco, Los Angeles. The show features a series of limited-edition signs, silk-screened on wood signboards and is a call to action-a reminder of what is really important as this election nears. Original paper cuts will also be exhibited, including artwork from the 2009 “Wake Up” calendar, book covers, and new work inspired by the summer of berries and boats. A reception for McClure will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, October 18. Masakatsu Sashie’s works are often called “orb paintings” since he paints details from his youth as very detailed, compact spheres. Hailing from Kanazawa, Japan, his art captures the scope of his youthful activities and the orbs often represent memories that fade away from the world. His previous works were full of dark imagery, but his more recent pieces include vibrant, often colorful details such as vending machines, fast food signage, and videogames. He cites Mobile Suit Gundam as an influence, and enjoys art by Yukio Oscar Oiwa and Antonio Lopez Garcia. Currently, he teaches at his alma mater, Kanazawa College of Art. Sashie got his start at Takashi Murakami’s GEISAI shows in Japan. In America, he has shown at GEISAI USA at GR2 and the Giant Robot Biennale at the Japanese American National Museum. Under Fluorescent Light will be his first solo show in the United States, and will feature 2 gigantic paintings accompanied by 10 smaller pieces.

I See It All by Deth P. Sun GRNY, August 23 – September 10, 2008 Reception: Saturday, August 23, 6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Giant Robot Gallery 437 East 9th Street Between 1st Ave. & Ave. A, in the East Village New York, New York 10009 (212) 674-GRNY (4769) / grny.net Giant Robot is proud to present new work by Deth P. Sun at the GRNY Gallery. Deth P. Sun’s acrylic paintings on panels bring epic landscapes and cosmic occurrences into a private and personal world. Influenced by David Attenborough, as well as the Moomin series and films of Terry Gilliam, the Oakland-based artist seeks to create a fantasy world as a reflection of his own experiences and worldview. It is a place where cold mountains loom under the stars, cloaked figures arrive with the night, and lone dreamers struggle–a place where hope and belief still shine in dark times. For I See It All, Sun is reaching into his sketchbook for the loosest, most natural ideas to realize and make public.
