Here’s a short film about Ako Castuera. It’s part of a new video series I intend to pursue called, the Artist Friends Series. I shot, recorded, and edited this film, and got a great music contribution from Goh Nakamura and Tim Bulkley. I’ve known Ako for many years, and actually met her at her Art’s Crab Shack days in Oakland, CA in the mid-later 90s while she was enrolled at CCAC. She’s married to artist, Rob Sato and pursues work that involves nature, humans, and dinosaurs. Often using watercolors, she’s also a knitter and makes beautiful tapestry pieces, and that hat that’s resting on the back of the chair. She’s 1/3 of the Realms exhibition taking place this saturday at Giant Robot 2 in LA along with Elsa Mora and Yellena James. Some preview images are at gr2.net

There’s a lot of interesting stuff floating around the GR office, and this particular design has a story that should be told. The design has a retro feel because it’s based on the Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! videogame from 2005. Released for the DS exclusively in Japan, the game follows a male cheerleader squad team dedicated to helping people in times of crisis. Taking a high-school exam, making pottery, wooing a girl, saving the world from an asteroid–wouldn’t any task be a little easier if men with armbands were cheering you on in a synchronized fashion? The task of this article of clothing happens to be assisting Giant Robot. The woes of print publishing are well-documented and our particular challenges have been fully disclosed, so it was extra cool of our friends at Meat Bun, the masters of turning obscure videogames into hip T-shirt designs, to raise money for GR with this shirt. That’s actually Eric in the middle of the manga panel (I recognize the T-shirt he’s wearing, if not the expression) clutching back issues of GR. Can you identify them all? Find more information and images (or even buy your own) at the GR shop site. Support GR and keep the spirit of weird videogames alive!

Cool shot. That’s at the end of the night. Meatbun Game Night 3. Drizzly, but still fun, Game Night 3 was an all out war of gaming. From Super Meatboy projected in HD to Typing of the Dead on Dreamcast, to Street Fighter, gaming outdoors on Sawtelle is hard to beat. Meatbun featured the Ouendan style Giant Robot shirt which you see at the bottom of the photo below. Giant Robot is also proud to be carrying Meatbun shirts in all locations. The LA one has them now, SF soon!

The art on the flyer? That’s me. I didn’t realize it, but you know? It sort of looks like me. I asked the Meatbun folks and they said yes! It’s going to be a T shirt that’ll be available at the event and onward at GR2 this friday along with some of their other designs. Meatbun is featured in Giant Robot 67, and the dudes behind the game inspired t-shirts are Giant Robot supporters. It’s based on a game that has a cheerleading element to it. It’s
