Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

Up in the air you get copters flying around. I make an effort to take a look and see if there's a dude running on the streets. Is he going to jump into my backyard and hide? If so, I need to know. They might have infra-red so I shouldn't worry about it, but at the same time, I'm thinking about COPS. There's a person running around recording this chase. Me, I'm going to be the guy who points to the cops, “there he is!” This time, in my heroism, I put on my shoes, walked outside, walked down the street, took some pics, but saw no one. The copter flew in circles and circles and made it's loud noise at around 10:45pm. The light then shined on me. “Yes it was me. I did it.” Then the light went off of me and back to the buildings. The light seemed to shine in the most random places. They had no idea who or where they were looking at. Eventually the bird flew away, and the cops drove off. They all looked at me, while I stood obvious in the street. Lesson: If you're a thief, or running, just stand around outside and watch. They'll leave you a alone.

Honey Pig. What can be crazier than a place with this name. But in the end, it's just another form of Korean BBQ. Same idea, different grill. Is it good? Yes! Watch the oils run down the sides of the inverted wok like grill. That's Yukie Kito. She's a producer and a different kind from what I can tell. Indie spirited, she produced Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Tokyo Sonata among many others. Watch for more great projects soon. She's based in Japan. That's Ayako Fujitani on right, and the thumb? That belongs to Amanda Plummer. Some of you clowns might know her as Hunny Bunny from Pulp Fiction, but there's so much more… Talent all around, while I just sit and eat, but we're planning a plan.

Sonic Youth. It took some days to digest this show. Amazing. Imagine, this band is an early 80s band. I was turned onto them somewhere in the later later 80s, but here it is 2010, 30 years later and they can still make great music, and they can play live like none other. From the many meters we sat from the stage, Kim Gordon looked great. Thurston sounded awesome, Lee and Steve Shelley rocked it. They played like a great unit and didn’t mess with their hits. The coolest thing about the show was it was 9 songs, and yeah… no, “Teenage Riot”, “Kool Thing”, etc. What nerve they have! If I were in a band like that playing the Bowl, I’d almost think you’d have to play those songs. But that’s what makes SY, SY. Until it gets taken down… here’s a link to the show!

Deth P Sun and Ferris Plock descended upon GR2 in Los Angeles. Deth P Sun's been showing at GR since either 2002 or 2003. So long ago, that I can't quite remember, but I do recall the show. Ferris Plock, I met at APE way back. 2001? What kind of name is that? I thought. Bay area dudes and their graffiti names. But he didn't do graffiti, he put stickers up with his drawings. I remember it was the familiar red, black, and white color combo. These dudes knew each other via their friends, fiancees, wives, all knowing each other and going to school together. Now, they get to do a show. Deth did his grids. I really like the way these come out.

It's not the food. Yes, it's pretty good. But it's the place. The main one, I believe is off the 710 Freeway, and this one is huge. It's a bit sketchy, but a cop was dining there so people felt comfortable. The people are mixed. Some are families, but some aren't. I saw a few hoods come, and when they saw the cops, they left. The funniest thing is the horchata tastes just like a glazed donut! The police man drove off in a huge rush, and once he left, everyone sitting in the outdoor area soon left. Guess what? They're local and know what's up. It was time to leave. King Taco is an east side of LA institution. Don't go at 2AM on a weekend, the line is gigantic. Who says LA closes early? You just need a car.
