Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

Why pagodas which made of wood, don’t sway and break down in an earthquake? The answer is in the levels where the eaves pop out so far. A) it helps with the foundation and water run off, otherwise, the water would just soften the foundation. B) it acts as stabilizers! There’s also a giant spire that hangs from the center. It acts like a pendulum so it helps keep the balance right. At times it doesn’t even touch the ground. How did Japanese architects in the 7th century know this? (Gizmodo – Pagoda)

NY Times writes about West Coast coffee style. The pour over. It’s been here and yes it’s about Hario brand glassware that makes your morning coffee that much better. Thinking about that espresso machine, grinder, and all that gear? Forget it. Just keep it simple. If you’re going to drink it every day, you might as well make it right. You can go all manual for about $100. It’s too bad they mention Williams Sonoma as the place to get everything. Perhaps they’re a big advertiser in the NY Times, but there are plenty of places to order it online. Just do a search and you’ll probably find a better rate. If not get it locally. Support the shop that carries it. (NY Times – Hario)

We can almost give this a “ho hum” since it was definitely coming. Much to the chagrin of many, Japanese whaling continues for the purpose of “research.” There’s no excuse. The food ends up on menus and school lunches and the activists will definitely be back at it. They actually make a difference, but they shouldn’t ever have them on a TV show. (Guardian UK – Whaling)

Fixie fans, don’t ride in Tokyo without brakes, you’ll get a ticket worth over $500. Yes, it’s hard to be that person who has a fixed gear bicycle that has hand brakes, but like a fake video security camera that really does nothing, then someone needs to invent cool fake brakes. Maybe it doubles up as a cell phone holder or a tagging marker, but it’s a law that bikes must have brakes. Not just a front, but both. (Yomiuri – Fixed Gear)

Imagine when you create that special sculpture using LEGO and it’s yours. It’s one of a kind. Now since LEGO is starting to crowd source for special editions, your creation can get made and guess what? You get 1% of the net profit, which means, you can get paid to lay brick. You need 10,000 votes and then it happens, it’s in. 10,000? I’m sure the piece below which at this moment has something under 100 votes will definitely gain the 10,000. Can’t you hear Doc look at his watch and say, “DAMN!”? Maybe there’s issues with Hollywood, but who knows. LEGO CUUSOO
