Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

Two days of FYF is pretty manageable when you live 15 minutes away and doors don’t open until two. I got to sleep late, have brunch with my family, and still roll in early enough to find free Sunday street parking and order one of the best ice coffees ever while walking through Chinatown. Seriously, the helper at Hill Street Cafe & Cigar brewed and poured fresh espresso, spooned in some condensed milk, added ice, topped it off, sealed it in a boba cup, and then shook it by hand. I love FYF but that probably wasn’t going to happen in one of the food trucks, and definitely not for 3 bucks.

Jonathan Richman kicked of the day with a set that reminded us that music is made by humans for humans. The ex-Modern Lover who appeared in There’s Something About Mary not only chooses to surround himself with people rather than watch TV and have conversations in person rather than with a cell phone, but doesn’t even use monitors when playing with his buddy Tommy onstage. It’s that immediacy, integrity, and honesty that makes him a hero to punks and all music that stems from it.

As far as I’m concerned, there is only one band who is the greatest – they’re My Bloody Valentine. I’ve written about them before, here and there, but mostly just listened and relistened to them over and over. I even did an art piece inspired by their music that includes myself in it. I can’t help but write about them now. It’s late and I just realized that MBV just released their first album since their last album, Loveless in 1991. They released their latest album “m b v” online and on youtube so you can listen to it right away. The first song alone, She Found Now is worth the 22 year wait. It’s what I’ve been waiting for. The skies just opened up. I’m happy. youtubelink you can click on their user name to hear more.

Here’s a list of 7 questions I answered for Sassytidbits.com! Thanks much. Where are you? West Los Angeles If, starting today, you could only listen to one record/cd/digital album for six months, what would it be? Easy, it’s My Bloody Valentine – Loveless. What is your ultimate couch (burn out/hangover) day entertainment? I don’t drink at all but I’d play Modern Warfare.  Although it sounds crude, it’s a great lesson in teamwork and a look into the habits and mentality of people, if you choose to play that way.  You can just blast away mindlessly if you want as well. I don’t. What kind of art do you live with? Too much to show on my walls, but I have art everywhere. It’s not important that it hangs on a wall honestly; I get as much joy seeing it in a flat file drawer. It’s still art and it’s still appreciated and cared for. The rest is at Sassytidbits.com!
