What a difference a few years makes. His film Pieta just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, but with some controversy. Evidently, the PT Anderson film was supposed to win, but because there’s a rule of winning more than two awards, the jury had to go back. (Nation – Kim Ki-duk)

Sion Sono is dark and hope hardly exists in any of his films. Himizu looks to be more of the same, as he uses the tsunami as a backdrop. Yet he does mention that he shouldn’t make a film without hope. How rare! He scores the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival. Asian filmmakers and actresses score as well.
