Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

Is this the real dude from the commercials? It looks just like him and he’s not that tall. Burger Town refers to a map in one of the games, and the actual burgers were expensive. $12! There’s a menu photo in the set below! The event began with a traffic jam, it was best to park and walk rather than try to get into the lots. Thousands came out for the opening talk by the Activision president, the Jeep guy and the developers, which explains the future game, Modern Warfare 3. There’s other sites more geared for the details, but the event itself, is huge. It’s spread out, from indoor displays of guns to outdoor zip lines, paint balling, Jeep rides, displays of huge military trucks, food places, a shop, and a journalist hangout which has free food. Yes there’s activities, sumo suits, game tournaments, and more. Really, it’s an event geared for the hardcore dude fan, but at the same time, isn’t quite perfect. I’d add a few more things for the less hardcore. Maybe it needs to intersect more with culture that we all live in, rather than trying to recreate the fantasy world. I’m not quite sure, but perhaps that’s something else to think about. Yes, I’d have liked other things aside just the Modern Warfare games, maybe something that’s not electronic and not paint ball. Yet, it’s still fun and you can get a free Elite package as part of the swag bag. The one bad thing, looooong lines. Can you wait an hour to two or more to zip line? I overhead that was the wait time, and that line wasn’t too long. If you’re there from 10-10, why not, waiting in line is the break time, right? It’s a great event, and if it’s annual, this will be a hit, it can only grow.

This immensely popular game is only going to grow with the next installment. Modern Warfare 3 looks like a blockbuster in the making. The current version, Black Ops is already the most popular game ever in terms of sales, and having an event like this in a sound stage with journalists from all over the world makes sense. Modern Warfare and Call of Duty is huge.

When I pop in Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, I was welcome by some familiar faces and new faces I have never seen before in the Gundam series. As I started the game I was welcomed by the Dynasty Warriors interface which shows: Story Mode, Online mode, or System were you have options and can even check out the gallery section which contains background of all the Mobile Suit pilots. The Mobile Suit gallery is an option were you can view information of each Mobile Suit you can encounter. BGM (background music) gallery contains music from the game and of course a movie gallery. By picking Story Mode you automatically start off as Amuro Ray the hero of Gundam 0083.{correction made by Nahart G} when in fact Amuro Ray is from Gundam 0079

China is a problematic country to those of us in the west, particularly because of the things we read and hear about the policies and actions of the communist government. Cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai and the Special Economic Zones in places like Guangdong Provinceseem pretty wide-open and free, while the rest of the country mostly suffers from the oppressive, bureaucratic grind of the central communist authority in Beijing. So it seems ironic, at least to us, that a video game company in Shanghai would borrow the political and aesthetic themes of Chinese communism to create and promote video games for fun and profit. But that’s just what Shanghai game company Online Technology is doing. Starting at the end of this month, two communist-themed games will be widely available on both the web and on iPad. The web game, “A Spark Can Set the Foreston Fire”, has players battling and conquering enemies by disseminating communist theory. The iPad game, “Red Campaign”, makes the player participate in three battle campaigns set during the Second Sino-Japanese War. And both games, according to the company, were created to celebrate the upcoming 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. Okay, we are all used to video games that glorify violence, but communist politics? It might be fun to check these games out to see how such concepts fit into your gaming comfort zone. (CNNGo – Chinese Communist Video Games) Here is a direct link to the Online Technology website (in Chinese). Links to the communist games are at the bottom.

With the launch of the Nintendo 3DS this year, 2011 is the year of the gamer! In addition to the influx of many new games and new platforms, older titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and the Street Fighter series are making a come back. Giant Robot pays homage to the gamer in all of this by hosting Game Night at GR2, where gamers and developers come together to play classic games as well as new releases. Our recent Game Night 5 featured the new titles Skullgirls by Reverge Labs and Skulls of the Shogun Haunted Temple Games for fans to enjoy, and our friends at Meat Bun provided gear for the night’s events. Meat Bun is the leading company in providing t-shirts for geeks and gamers. Their designs are bright, creative, amusing and nostalgic, bringing the appeal of video games to the masses and bringing back memories of Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Gamers and fans alike came out to GR2 and donned their signature apparel as Giant Robot offers 11 different designs for geeks, gamers, and everyone in-between. Three of our popular designs are featured here. In collaboration with Giant Robot, the Osu! T-shirt features the average intense gamer in the aftermath of a pixelated duel! The neon yellow Fight Night T-shirt advertises the upcoming showdown between Vega and Balrog at Block Head Pub! The three t-shirts below call out to the classic gamer who fought 8-bit vampires and eggplant wizards. Only the scar-battled gamer can recall the feeling of triumph and relief with the Beheaded T-shirt, featuring the ultimate fate of Count Dracula at the hands of Simon Belmont, and inevitably the anguish of a never-ending battle as the Lord of the Night always makes a return! The Secrets T-shirt quotes one of the most infamous words uttered by the ultimate undead: “What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!” Gamers know that the battle against the Count is never-ending. Meat Bun also reminds us all about the devious power of the Eggplant Wizard, who has never looked more menacing before. He isn’t the bumbling goofball from your childhood Saturday morning cartoons. This wizard is deadly! Expect to see more of the vegetable overlord as Kid Icarus: Uprising will be released on the 3DS.
